Dudley Farm Historic State Park
Dudley Farm is a one-of-a-kind iconic 325-acre working “Cracker” farm where you can witness the evolution of North Florida farming through the eyes of three generations of the Dudley family, from the pioneer days circa 1850 to the introduction of gasoline-powered equipment circa 1945.
The National Register of Historic Places includes Dudley Farm Historic State Park. A visitor center, park staff dressed in period costume performing chores, production and harvest of heritage crop varieties and sugar cane, raising of heritage livestock varieties such as Cracker cows and Barred Rock chickens, family farmhouse with original furnishings, general store and post office, 1880s kitchen outbuilding, cane syrup complex with autumn cane grinding, boiling, bottling, seasonal corn shucking, nature trail and picnic area are some of the highlights.
Goethe State Forest
The Goethe State Forest encompasses 53,587 acres, with a small disconnected tract (the Watermelon Pond unit) extending into Alachua County. The forest contains a variety of natural communities, including mesic Flatwoods, dome swamps, sandhills, and hydric hammocks. The forest is home to endangered species such as the black bear, gopher tortoise, bald eagle, and red-cockaded woodpecker.
The area is densely forested with old-growth longleaf pines and bald cypress trees, the most famous of which is the “Goethe Giant,” a massive nine-foot-diameter bald cypress tree located in the Cow Creek tract. A trailhead along Cow Creek Road provides access to a 1/4-mile trail and boardwalk. This location also has picnic tables. Hikers, off-road bicyclists, and horseback riders can choose from a variety of trails. Goethe State Forest has well-marked trails for you to explore whether you are looking for a short hike with the family or a strenuous backpacking trip.
Watermelon Pond
Watermelon Pond is a vast prairie complex that was once a massive lake that served as a haven for wading birds situated within the city limits of Newberry; 18 miles south of Gainesville. This is one of the more remote natural lands near Gainesville, protecting over 4,200 acres. The panoramic views along the prairie rim make the 5.5-mile double-loop trail system a delightful hiking destination.
