Rochelle is a place found in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The area itself is considered an unincorporated community which was discovered in the 1830s as a former native settlement and mission site. Actually, the community itself had been at jurisdiction on the Florida Southern Railway, it had the lines running all throughout Gainesville, Ocala, and Palatka.

Like Windsor, the area was first settled by farmers and plantation owners in the 1840s. Madison Starke Perry, who would go on to serve as governor of Florida, owned 3,000 acres in what was first known as Perry Junction. He had moved from South Carolina in 1847 to start a cotton plantation. Governor Perry died in 1865 and is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Rochelle, the second oldest cemetery in the county.

The community itself didn’t actually start out as “Rochelle” but instead, was known as Perry, or Perry Junction. This was only changed to Gruelle in 1881 which takes after N. R. Gruelle, the General Manager of the Florida Southern Railway. With that said, the stations actually stayed listed as Perry on the first timetable issued by the railway, at least, until it reached Gainesville in 1881.

After some time, namely in the year 1884, the community’s name was changed yet again to what it is known for now, as “Rochelle”. The name this time was taken after the parents of Governor Perry’s wife. The town had all kinds of different amenities including hotels, stores, sawmills, and even an express office. Citrus became one of the most important products of the town and it grew, getting new facilities such as schools and churches.
